Kinnie is a special soft drink from Malta. It has a unique bittersweet taste. It's made from bitter oranges and a plant extract called wormwood.
Kinnie was first created in 1952 by a company called Simonds Farsons Cisk. It is still made by Farsons in Malta today. Kinnie is brown in color. People often drink it by itself. Many people in Malta love Kinnie, and it is sometimes called their "national soft drink."
The Story of Kinnie
Kinnie was invented by Anthony Miceli Farrugia, who was in charge of Simonds Farsons Cisk. He created Kinnie in 1952. He wanted to make a different kind of soft drink, not like the cola drinks that were popular after World War II, such as Coca-Cola.
Kinnie's taste was made to be special and different from other international drinks. This helped it stand out. In 1975, a French group that focuses on food and tourism gave Kinnie an award. They named it the "soft drink of the year."
The exact recipe for Kinnie is a secret! People guess it might contain ingredients like ginseng and rhubarb.
Different Kinnie Drinks
Over the years, new versions of Kinnie have been made:
- In 1984, Diet Kinnie was introduced. This version has fewer calories.
- In 2007, Kinnie Zest became available. This is a low-calorie drink with a stronger orange flavor. It is advertised as having only one calorie per bottle.
- In 2014, Simonds started selling Kinnie Vita. This drink is sweetened using a mix of sugar and stevia leaf extract.
