Discovering Gold in Kintore
Kintore became a town because of gold! In December 1894, two people called prospectors, Leith and Barrett, found gold in this area. Prospectors are people who explore for valuable minerals like gold.
Naming the First Gold Mine
The very first gold mine found here was named after a special visitor. His name was Algernon Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore. He was the Governor of South Australia at the time, which means he was like the leader of that state. He was visiting Western Australia when the gold was found.
How Kintore Became a Town
After gold was discovered, more and more people moved to the area. The population grew very quickly! Local people formed a group called a "progress committee." They asked the government to officially declare Kintore a town. This happened in 1897, when the town was "gazetted," which means it was officially recognized and recorded by the government.
Kintore's Early Population
By the year 1898, Kintore had a population of 240 people. This included 200 males and 40 females.
