The Story of Kintyre Camanachd
Shinty's Roots in Kintyre
Shinty has been played in the Kintyre area for a very long time. In the past, games were often played on New Year's Day. These matches were known for being very competitive and sometimes quite rough!
Founding the Club
Kintyre Camanachd was officially formed in 1985. The club quickly started to make its mark. In 1992, they won the South Division Four Championship. This was a big achievement for the team! They also played against a team from Islay for the Camanachd Ile Cup in the early 1990s.
Challenges and Changes
Over the years, Kintyre Camanachd has faced some challenges. Being located in the remote Mull of Kintyre can make it hard to travel for games. Because of this, the club has sometimes had periods where it wasn't playing in senior leagues.
However, shinty is still important in Kintyre. The Under 17 team sometimes plays in the South Area League. Some older players from Kintyre even go to play for Kilmory Camanachd to continue playing at a senior level.

A Bright Future for Shinty
There is good news for shinty in Campbeltown! A campaign to build an all-weather sports park was successful. This new park could really help Kintyre Camanachd grow and perhaps even return to senior league status.
The Camanachd Association, which is the main group for shinty, has also been working on youth development in Kintyre since 2011. With new facilities and a focus on young players, everyone hopes to see Kintyre Camanachd become a strong force in shinty once again!
