A Look Back at Kirkville's Past
Kirkville was named after a person called Dr. J.D. Kirk. Back in 1900, only about 50 people lived here.
The Kirkville post office started operating even before the American Civil War. It was still open in 1905.
In the early 1900s, there was a special factory in Kirkville. It was called a stave mill. This mill made staves, which are thin pieces of wood. These staves were used to build things like barrels. Many workers at this mill came from the Green River valley in Kentucky.
The Kirkville Baptist Church and its cemetery are also located in the community. Dr. J.D. Kirk, who the town is named after, is buried in this cemetery.
