Kirsten Sinding-Larsen (born August 4, 1898 – died December 10, 1978) was a talented Norwegian architect. She was known for designing homes and a major hospital. She also spoke up about how to make better housing for everyone.

Early Life and Family Background

Kirsten Sinding-Larsen was born in Kristiania, which is now Oslo, Norway. Her father, Birger Fredrik Sinding-Larsen, was a colonel. Her mother was Emilie Rustad.

Kirsten came from a family with many creative and professional people. Her grandfather, Alfred Sinding-Larsen, was a writer. She had an uncle who was a doctor, another who was a painter, and another who was also an architect, Holger Sinding-Larsen. This family background likely inspired her own path in architecture.

Education and Early Career

Kirsten finished her high school education in 1912. She then went on to study at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1915 to 1917. This school is now known as the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

After her studies, Kirsten gained valuable experience. From 1919 to 1921, she worked as an apprentice for architect Sigurd Lunde in Bergen. She then moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where she worked with architects Håkon Ahlberg and Tage William-Olsson until 1927.

She continued her architecture studies at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm from 1927 to 1929. After graduating, she worked for Gustav Classon and Wolter Gahn, two more architects in Stockholm, until 1932.

Starting Her Own Practice

In 1932, Kirsten Sinding-Larsen returned to Oslo. She worked briefly with her uncle, Holger Sinding-Larsen, who was also an architect. Then, in 1933, she opened her very own architecture office. This was a big step for her career.

Notable Works and Contributions

Between 1933 and 1938, Kirsten designed many homes. These houses were built in Moss and Jeløy in Østfold, Norway. Her designs helped shape these communities.

One of her most famous projects was the design of Sunnaas Hospital. This hospital is located in Nesodden and was built in the mid-1950s. Designing a hospital is a complex task, and it shows her skill as an architect.

Beyond designing buildings, Kirsten Sinding-Larsen was also active in public discussions. She was known for speaking up about housing policy. This means she cared about how homes were built and made available for everyone. She wanted to make sure people had good places to live.
