Kirsty Hawkshaw's Music Journey
Kirsty Hawkshaw's father was Alan Hawkshaw. He was a famous British composer who wrote music for films and TV shows. He also produced disco records. Her mother, Christiane Bieberbach, was born in Germany.
Starting with Opus III
In 1990, Kirsty was at a rave party. This is a large dance party with electronic music. There, she met producers Ian Munro, Kevin Dodds, and Nigel Walton. They were known as A.S.K. and had a record deal.
Kirsty was first invited to dance on stage with them. Soon after, they decided to form a dance group called Opus III.
First Big Hits
Opus III's first song was "It's a Fine Day". It was a cover version from their first album, Mind Fruit. This song became a huge success around the world. It reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart. In 1992, it hit No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
A special reversed sound of Kirsty's singing from this song was used in the Orbital track "Halcyon". Kirsty also appeared in the music video for "Halcyon." Opus III had another No. 1 hit in the US in 1994. This was with the song "When You Made the Mountain" from their second album, Guru Mother.
Moving On from Opus III
Kirsty decided to leave Opus III in 1994. She felt that the group was becoming too "commercial." This means it was focused more on making money than on artistic freedom. She wanted to explore different music styles.
Kirsty also felt she didn't have enough say in writing and producing the music. This caused some disagreements within the band. She has said she does not plan for Opus III to get back together.
Solo Career and Collaborations
After Opus III, Kirsty started her own solo music career. Many other artists in electronic, house, and trance music wanted to work with her. She has collaborated with famous names like Tiësto, Delerium, BT, and Hybrid.
Her solo song "Fine Day" reached number 62 in the UK Singles Chart in November 2002. In 2004, Kirsty contributed a song called "Telephone Song" to a children's album. This album was titled For the Kids Too!.
On October 10, 2005, she released Meta-Message. This album was a collection of her older and newer songs. People were very interested in her earlier album, O.U.T., which was hard to find. In 2008, the record label Magnatune released her calm, atmospheric album, The Ice Castle.
