Kizzy Crawford, also known as Kizzy, is a singer and songwriter from Wales. She has family roots in Barbados. Kizzy sings in both English and Welsh. She mixes old and new styles in her music. Kizzy started writing songs when she was 13 years old.

About Kizzy Crawford

Kizzy was born in Oxford, England. When her parents divorced in 1999, she moved to Wales. She lived with her mother, sister, and grandparents. They lived in Aberaeron and Llandeilo before settling in Merthyr Tydfil. Her mother wanted to raise her children in Wales.

Kizzy's father's family comes from Barbados. She is the oldest of five children. Kizzy learned Welsh from the age of four. Her sister, Eädyth, is also a singer. When Kizzy was 26, she learned she has autism.

Kizzy's Music Career

Kizzy Crawford won the Arts Connect Original Singer-Songwriter prize in 2012. This led to her working with Amy Wadge. She recorded her first song, Starling. She also made a music video for it. This was part of Arts Connect's Sonig project.

Early Performances and Releases

In August 2013, Kizzy performed "The Starling" live. This was on BBC Radio Wales's Bethan Elfyn Show. Her first song, "The Starling," came out in November 2013. Her EP (a mini-album) Temporary Zone followed in December. It was released by a Cardiff record label.

During 2013, Kizzy appeared on many radio and TV shows in Wales. She also performed at several music events. These included FOCUS Wales Festival and the Sŵn festival. She also played at the Green Man Festival and Caerphilly Castle. Kizzy performed at Maes B during the National Eisteddfod of Wales. She also played at Festival No 6.

Signing and BBC Horizons

In 2014, Kizzy signed with the publishing company BDi Music. She was featured in BBC Wales promotions for the Six Nations Championship 2014. She sang "Calon Lân" for these. In April 2014, she was chosen as one of twelve BBC Horizons acts. This program supports new musical talent.

Later that year, she performed at Glastonbury Festival. She played on the BBC Introducing stage. Since then, she has performed at many other festivals. These include WOMEX, Blissfields, Hay Festival, and Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Collaborations and Achievements

In 2015, Kizzy released the song "Shout Out / Yr Alwad." She wrote it with Owen Powell. This song became the soundtrack for the Visit Wales 2015 TV campaign. Kizzy performed at the Euro 16 Welsh team homecoming concert. She shared the stage with the Manic Street Preachers.

In 2016, some of her songs were chosen for the WJEC A Level Music Syllabus. This means students studying music could learn about her work. Kizzy was invited to perform and talk about this on Woman's Hour for BBC Radio 4.

Later in 2016, Kizzy worked with jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock. They created Birdsong - Can Yr Adar. This music was inspired by the Welsh rainforest in Carngafallt. They wrote new music together. They toured Wales with Sinfonia Cymru. Their tour ended with a show at the London Jazz Festival. In 2018, the Birdsong-Can Yr Adar CD was released. A jazz journalist listed it as a top 100 album of 2018.

In 2017, Kizzy performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. She also played at Cambridge Folk Festival. She had a small acting role in the BBC drama Keeping Faith.

In 2018, Kizzy signed with Freestyle Records. She released her album The Way I Dream in 2019. In November 2021, Kizzy released her first Welsh album, Rhydd. She recorded, produced, and mixed it herself. It was released with Sain Records.

Kizzy's Support for Wales

In September 2019, Kizzy sang Calon Lân with her sister Eädyth. This was at a YesCymru event in Merthyr Tydfil. She showed her support for Welsh independence at this rally.
