Klein is a talented singer, songwriter, and producer from South London, England. She is known for her unique sound. In 2017, she released her EP Tommy with the UK label Hyperdub. Her albums Lifetime (2019) and Frozen (2020) have also received much praise. These albums were released on her own record label, ijn inc.
Klein's Story
Klein grew up in South London and has Nigerian roots. She loved gospel music and theatre from a young age. Before making music, she enjoyed writing poetry. She then started producing music as a hobby. Early on, musicians like Mica Levi and Arca encouraged her.
In 2016, Klein released her first projects, ONLY and Lagata, by herself. People quickly noticed her unique sound. She gained many fans and received good reviews from magazines like The Wire.
In 2017, she released her EP Tommy with the UK label Hyperdub. She also appeared on Laurel Halo’s album Dust. Her music got great reviews from places like Tiny Mix Tapes and Pitchfork Media. In 2018, Klein directed and wrote the music for a musical called Care. It was a fantasy story inspired by Disney princesses and the UK's care system. The musical was first shown at the ICA in London.
What Her Music Sounds Like
Klein's music is often described as "grainy pop collages." It mixes R&B-style singing with sounds that are changed a lot (called audio samples). You can also hear strange, humming sounds (called drones). AllMusic described her work as "an utterly unique, surreal blend of R&B and experimental electronics."
She creates her tracks using a sound editing program called Audacity. Klein has many different influences. These include singer Brandy, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and rapper Soulja Boy. She also gets ideas from the reality TV show Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta. Klein often uses the word "spiral" to describe her music, both as a feeling and a way of creating.
