Knox is a small town located in Albany County, New York, in the United States. It is west of Albany, which is the state's capital city. In 2020, about 2,635 people lived in Knox.

History of Knox

The Town of Knox was created in 1822. It was formed from a part of another town called Berne.

During the American Revolutionary War, people in the area had different ideas about who to support. Some were loyal to Britain, while others wanted independence. This issue was settled when those loyal to Britain moved away.

A historic building, the Knox District School No. 5, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it's an important place to protect because of its history.

Geography and Location

Knox covers an area of about 41.9 square miles (108.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.

The western edge of Knox borders Schoharie County. The northern edge of the town borders Schenectady County.

Population and People

In 2020, the town of Knox had a population of 2,635 people. This number has changed over the years. For example, in 1830, there were 2,189 people, and in 1950, there were 1,172. The population has generally grown since the mid-1900s.

Communities and Places in Knox

  • East Township – This is a small community, also called a hamlet, located in the northeastern part of the town. You can find it along Route 146.
  • Knox (formerly "Knoxville") – This is the main hamlet of the town, found in the southern part. It's where State Route 156 and County Road 252 meet. A stream called Beaverdam Creek flows near this hamlet.
  • Peoria – This used to be a community located on the southern border of the town.
  • Thompson Lake – This is a lake that is partly located in the southeastern part of the town.
  • West Berne – This hamlet is located at the town line in the southwestern part of Knox.
  • West Township – Another hamlet, this one is in the northwestern part of the town, also on Route 146.
