History of Knox United Church

Early Beginnings

The church community, also known as a congregation, started way back in 1885. This was right after a historical event called the North-West Rebellion. It began as part of the Saskatoon Presbyterian Field Mission.

In the early days, the group didn't have its own building. They met in many different places. These included people's homes, the Old Stone Schoolhouse, and even the local Methodist Church. Sometimes, they even held meetings in the railway roundhouse!

Eventually, a small wooden church was built near the river. It could hold about 160 people. This was their first dedicated space.

Building the Current Church

The church you see today was designed by architects Brown and Vallance. They were from Montreal. They created the church in a style called Collegiate Gothic. This style looks a lot like old university buildings.

Construction on the new church began in 1912. It took two years to build. The church was finally finished in 1914.

Design and Features

Knox United Church is a large, two-storey building. It is made from dark red bricks. The church is famous for its beautiful stained-glass windows. These windows let colorful light stream inside.

The church is very spacious. It can seat up to 1,200 people. This makes it a great place for large gatherings.

Amazing Acoustics

Knox United Church has excellent acoustics. This means the sound inside the church is really clear and balanced. Because of this, it's a popular spot for many events.

People often use the church for concerts and other cultural performances. Chamber music groups especially love playing there. The sound quality makes every performance special.

The Institute for Stained Glass in Canada has even studied the church's stained glass. They have documented its beauty and history.
