Heiko "Ko" Wierenga (born March 6, 1933 – died September 21, 2013) was an important Dutch politician. He was a member of the Labour Party, which is a political group in the Netherlands. Ko Wierenga is most famous for being the Mayor of Enschede. This is a city in the Netherlands. He was the mayor for a long time, from September 1977 until April 1994.

Ko Wierenga's Early Career
Before becoming a mayor, Ko Wierenga was a member of the House of Representatives. This is like the parliament or congress in other countries. He worked there from 1967 to 1977. In this role, he helped make laws for the whole country.
Becoming Mayor of Enschede
After his time in the House of Representatives, Ko Wierenga became the mayor of Enschede. A mayor is the leader of a city or town. They help manage the city and make decisions for its people. During his time as mayor, many things happened in Enschede.
The "Egg of Ko" Artwork
One interesting thing that happened while Ko Wierenga was mayor was the installation of a special artwork. In 1984, a sculpture called Het ei van Ko was placed near Enschede's town hall. This artwork, which means "The Egg of Ko," was created by an artist named Joop Hekman. It became a well-known part of the city.
Honors and Later Life
Ko Wierenga was recognized for his hard work and service to the country. On April 29, 1987, he was given a special award. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a very high honor in the Netherlands. It shows that he was greatly respected for his contributions.
After he finished his term as mayor in 1994, Ko Wierenga continued to work. He worked for an organization that helped people find jobs. Ko Wierenga passed away on September 21, 2013, when he was 80 years old.
