Koen Verweij's Skating Journey
On December 30, 2007, Koen Verweij skated his first 10,000-metre race. This was at the Dutch all-round championships in Groningen. He finished fifth overall in the tournament. This amazing result meant he qualified as a reserve skater for the European all-round championship. This was a big deal because he was still a junior skater. He even skated faster times than famous skater Sven Kramer at the same age!
Later that season, he competed in the World Junior Championships in Changchun. He won the silver medal, coming in just behind his teammate Jan Blokhuijsen. Another teammate, Berden de Vries, won the bronze. It was the first time since 1997 that skaters from the same country won all three medals.
At the 2009 Dutch all-round championships, Verweij finished fourth. He greatly improved his personal best time in the 10,000 metres. This helped him qualify for the European all-round championships. Even though he fell in the 500 metres race, he still finished 12th overall. His best moment that season was winning at the World Junior Skating Championships. He won the 3000 metres, the 5000 metres, the overall title, and the team pursuit. Because of these great results, he received the Egbert van't Oever Encouragement award. This award is given to the best young Dutch skater.
At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Koen Verweij had a very close race. He finished second in the 1500 metres event. He was only 0.003 seconds behind the winner, Zbigniew Bródka. This was an incredibly tight finish!
