Kol people facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kols, also known as Kolarians, are a group of people who are considered the first inhabitants of parts of modern-day West Bengal and Northeast India. They are part of the Dravidian peoples group. Today, their descendants can still be found in West Bengal and other areas in eastern East India.

Ancient History of the Kol People

Scientists who study the Earth's history believe that most of Bangladesh was formed between 1 and 6.5 million years ago. This was during a time called the Tertiary era.

Early Stone Age Discoveries

Recent discoveries in a village called Deolpota in western Bengal suggest that people lived there about 100,000 years ago. This was during the Paleolithic period, also known as the Old Stone Age.

Stone Age Tools and Settlements

One important piece of evidence is a stone structure in Rangamati. It is thought to be between 10,000 and 15,000 years old. A hand axe found in the mountains of the Feni district also shows early human life. The Neo-Stone Age (New Stone Age) in this area began around 3,000 BC and lasted for about 1,500 years. Similar tools have been found in Sitakunda, in the eastern Chittagong Hill Tracts, and near the Comilla district. The hills in eastern Bengal had some trees and many fertile valleys. This made them good places for early people to settle down.

Physical Features of the Kol People

The native people of eastern India generally had certain physical traits. They often had long heads, dark skin, and broad noses. They were also typically short in height. These features are still seen today among many people in Bengal.
