A Home and Studio at the Grand Canyon
In 1902, brothers Emery C. Kolb (who lived from 1881 to 1976) and Ellsworth L. Kolb (1876–1960) first arrived at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. They were pioneers! In 1911, they even managed to travel all the way down the Colorado River by boat, filming their exciting journey.
The building they constructed, which we now call Kolb Studio, was built between 1904 and 1926. It was both their family home and their photography studio. Over the years, the building changed quite a bit, with two big additions and many smaller updates.
After Emery Kolb passed away in 1976, the National Park Service took over the historic studio. In the 1990s, the Grand Canyon Association worked hard to fix up the building. They turned it into what it is today.
What You Can Find at Kolb Studio Today
Now, the Grand Canyon Association runs an art gallery, a bookstore, and an information center inside the Kolb Studio. When you buy something at the bookstore, the money helps to take care of the building. The store also celebrates the Kolb brothers' famous photos of people riding mules at the Grand Canyon.
Right next to the Kolb Studio, to the west, is the beginning of the famous Bright Angel Trail. This trail leads hikers deep into the canyon.
Keeping Kolb Studio Strong
Between 2013 and 2014, the Grand Canyon Association worked on a big project to restore and fix up this important building. They wanted to make sure Kolb Studio stayed strong and safe for many more years.
The work included fixing problems that were making the building weak. For example, they:
- Fixed how water drained from the sidewalks and walls so it wouldn't damage the building.
- Made the concrete entrance safe for everyone to use.
- Repaired and replaced parts of the outside of the building, like the log and shingle siding, wooden beams, gutters, and porches. This helped make sure the building would last a long time.
- Added special paints and sealants to protect the newly fixed parts from the weather.
