Koliganek's Story
The community of Koliganek has an interesting past. It's actually the third village with this name along the Nushagak River!
The first village, called "Kalignak," was settled around 1870. It was located where the Nushagak and Nuyakuk Rivers meet. People lived there until about 1940, when they moved to a new spot.
The second Koliganek was about 5 miles downstream from the first one. Today, you can still find a cemetery and some old ruins there.
Then, in 1965, the people decided to move again. They moved about 4 miles further downstream to where the current Koliganek is located today. This means the Koliganek you see now is the newest version of the village.
