Kongbap is a yummy Korean dish. It's made by cooking white or brown rice with one or more kinds of soybeans. You can make Kongbap from scratch by cooking dried rice and soybeans together. Black soybeans are often used.

Sometimes, outside Korea, "kongbap" is sold as a ready-to-cook mix of different grains. But in Korea, if a rice dish has grains other than soybeans, it's usually called japgok-bap. This means "mixed cereal rice."

The Korean word kong usually means "soybean." Other beans have different names. For example, pat means adzuki beans. So, kongbap is only for soybean rice. Rice cooked with other beans, like French beans (called gangnangkong) or peas (called wandu), gets a special name. For example, gangnang-kong-bap is French bean rice, and wandu-kong-bap is pea rice.

Kongbap in Korean Culture

Even though kongbap is a healthy food, it wasn't always popular. For a long time, it was known as a main food in Korean places where people had to stay for a while, like a correctional facility. Because of this, the Korean saying kongbap meokda (콩밥 먹다) literally means "to eat kongbap." But it's used to mean "to be held in custody" or "to be in a correctional facility." This is like the English saying "to do porridge" which means the same thing.

However, things have changed! Recently, healthy eating has become very popular in South Korea. Because of this, more and more Korean families are enjoying kongbap at home. People now see it as a nutritious and tasty part of their meals.

Japgok-bap (Mixed-Grain Rice)

  • Japgok-bap is a type of bap (rice dish) that has many different grains. It often includes short-grain white and brown rice, green peas, adzuki beans, black soybeans, yulmu (a type of grain), black glutinous rice, barley, and sorghum. Before cooking, this mix is usually soaked in water for several hours or even overnight. This helps the beans become soft while they cook.
