Korrie Layun Rampan (born August 17, 1953 – died November 19, 2015) was a talented Indonesian writer and politician. He wrote novels, short stories, and poems. He was also a literary critic and journalist.

Korrie was born in Samarinda, East Kalimantan. He loved literature from a young age, writing many short stories and poems. While studying at university in Yogyakarta, he joined a writing group called Persada Studi Klub. He started publishing his works in many newspapers across Indonesia. In 1976, his first novel, Upacara, won second place in a big writing contest. He wrote hundreds of books, both fiction and non-fiction. He also served as a council member for the West Kutai Regency, helping to make decisions for his community.

Growing Up and Early Interests

Korrie Layun Rampan was born in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on August 17, 1953. His father, Paulus Rampan, was a retired sergeant in the Indonesian Army. His mother was Martha Renihay.

Korrie finished elementary school in just four years. During his fourth year, he started writing. He was inspired after reading Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck, a novel by Hamka. In junior high, he enjoyed reading literary magazines like Sastra and Horison. Throughout senior high school, he wrote poetry for his school's wall magazine. He also hosted a literature program called "Pancaran Sastra" on Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) in Samarinda. Because he was very good at school, Korrie received a scholarship. This scholarship paid for his junior high, senior high, and university education.

Moving to Yogyakarta for Studies

Korrie graduated from senior high school in Samarinda in 1970. He then moved to Yogyakarta on the island of Java to continue his studies. By 1981, he had graduated from the Academy of Finance and Banking there. Later, he continued his education at Gadjah Mada University, studying Social and Political Sciences.

While in Yogyakarta, he joined the Persada Studi Klub. This group was started in 1969 by writers like Umbu Landu Paranggi. It helped young authors publish their work in a special section of the Pelopor Yogya newspaper. Korrie also began publishing his writings in major newspapers like Kompas and Suara Karya, and in magazines such as Horison.

Korrie Layun Rampan had children and a family. He passed away on November 19, 2015.

His Career as a Writer

In 1976, Korrie Rampan's novel Upacara won second place in the Jakarta Arts Council Novel Competition. This was a big achievement for a young writer. The book was published two years later. Upacara is about the traditions of a Dayak tribe in the remote areas of Kalimantan. It shows how these traditions affect the main character's life. In 2014, the novel was translated into English by George A. Fowler and published as Ceremony.

Korrie also worked as an editor. He was an editor for Cypress Publishing from 1978 to 1980. Then, he worked for the daily newspaper Sinar Harapan from 1980 to 1982. After that, he became an editor for Sarinah magazine.

Living in Jakarta and Other Works

During this time, Korrie lived in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. He sometimes worked as a broadcaster for RRI and TVRI, which is the national television station. He also started the Arus Foundation. This foundation helped publish books and other works related to literature.

In 1984, Korrie's poetry collection for children, Cuaca di atas Gunung dan Lembah (which means 'The Weather above the Mountains and Valleys'), won an award. It was named the best poetry collection by the Buku Utama foundation.

After 2001, Korrie Rampan led the Sentawar Pos. This was a daily newspaper published in Barong Tongkok, West Kutai Regency. He also taught at Sendawar University in Melak, West Kutai.

Public Service and Legacy

Korrie Rampan served on the election commission for West Kutai during the 2004 election. He later resigned from this role to run for a seat on the regency's Regional People's Representatives Council. This council helps make local laws and decisions. He served on the council from 2004 to 2009. During his time there, he was even the head of Commission I, which is an important leadership position. Even while serving in politics, he continued to work as a journalist. He often traveled between Jakarta and West Kutai for his work.

By 2009, Korrie had collected about 25,000 books! Most of these books were about literature. Some of his oldest books were from the 19th century, part of Chinese Malay literature. He used these books to help him document and study Indonesia's literature.

Korrie Rampan passed away on November 19, 2015, at the Rumah Sakit Islam in Jakarta. He was a very important figure in Indonesian literature and public life.
