Her Early Life

Krista Belle Stewart grew up in the interior of British Columbia. She is part of the Upper Nicola Band. Her mother, Seraphine, was a very important person. She was the first First Nations public health nurse in British Columbia. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation even made a documentary about Seraphine in 1967.

Her Art and Projects

Krista Belle Stewart's art often mixes old things like photos and videos with new art techniques. She uses different types of collage and fiber art. One of her early projects was called Self Portrait on a Canning Lid. For this, she used old photography methods like tintype. This helped her create images that connected to her cultural history.

In 2014, she made an art piece called Motion and Moment Always. This artwork showed a historical picture of chiefs from the Nisga'a First Nations. She worked with a weaver named Ruth Scheuing to turn the image into a weaving. This piece also includes items like soil from Douglas Lake, where Krista grew up. It also highlights the important roles of women in First Nations cultures.

In 2019, Krista's artwork Earthbound Mnemonic was shown on the BC Hydro Dal Grauer Substation in Vancouver. This was part of the Capture Photography Festival.

Where Her Art Has Been Shown

Krista Belle Stewart has had her own art shows in many places. These include SFU Galleries in Burnaby (2018–19) and the Nanaimo Art Gallery (2019). She also had shows at the Kelowna Art Gallery (2016) and the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver (2015).

Her art has also been part of group shows with other artists. Some of these include In Search of Expo 67 in Montreal (2017). She also showed her work at the Vancouver Art Gallery (2016–17).

In 2019, Krista Belle Stewart received the VIVA Award. This award came from the Jask and Doris Shadbolt Foundation.
