Kristanna Loken was born on October 8, 1979, in Ghent, New York. Her parents came from a Norwegian community in Wisconsin. Her mother, Rande, was a model, and her father, Merlin "Chris" Loken, was a writer, apple farmer, and actor. Kristanna has a sister named Tanya.
Kristanna has Norwegian and German family roots. Her grandparents even spoke Norwegian. She has said that she feels both Norwegian and American. She enjoys following Norwegian traditions, especially during holidays like Christmas. She grew up in Upstate New York and first visited Norway when she was 12 years old.

Kristanna's mother encouraged her to try modeling. In 1994, she took part in the Elite Model Look competition and finished as the third runner-up. That same year, she began her acting career on the TV show As the World Turns. She then appeared in several other TV shows like Philly, Unhappily Ever After, and Boy Meets World.
In 1998, Kristanna starred as Taja in the TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest. Her big break came in 2003 when she played the T-X, a powerful robot, in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. This role made her very well-known.
