Kristina Brenk (born October 22, 1911 – died November 20, 2009) was a very important writer from Slovenia. She is most famous for the amazing books she wrote for children. She was also a poet, a translator, and an editor.

Brenk was born in a place called Horjul in 1911. At that time, Horjul was part of Austria-Hungary. She later studied at the University of Ljubljana. There, she learned about psychology (how people think) and pedagogy (how to teach). She earned a special high degree called a doctorate in 1939.

During the Second World War, Kristina Brenk joined a group called the Liberation Front of the Slovene Nation. This group worked to help Slovenia during the war.

From 1949 until she retired in 1973, she worked as an editor. She worked at a publishing company called Mladinska Knjiga. This company publishes books, especially for young people.

Honors and Awards

Kristina Brenk received many honors for her work. In 1999, she won the important Levstik Award. This award was given to her for all her amazing work in children's writing throughout her life.

She passed away in Ljubljana and is buried in a cemetery called Žale.

Since 2011, a special award has been named after Kristina Brenk. This award is for the best original Slovene picture book. It shows how much her work is still valued today.
