Kristine Sutherland (born Kristine Young on April 17, 1955) is an American actress. She is most famous for playing Buffy Summers' mom, Joyce Summers, in the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She was in this show from 1997 to 2003. Kristine also played Mae Thompson in the popular movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989).

Kristine Sutherland's Early Life
Kristine Young was born in Boise, Idaho. She decided to change her last name because another actress had a very similar name. People often got them mixed up!
She chose the name "Sutherland" after her cat, who she had named "Donald." Her cat was named after the famous actor Donald Sutherland. It's a funny coincidence that Donald Sutherland was in the first Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. Kristine is not related to Donald Sutherland or his family.
Kristine went to high school in Lexington, Kentucky. She loved drama and took part in many plays there. After high school, she went to the University of Kentucky.
Kristine Sutherland's Acting Career
Kristine Sutherland's first movie role was a small part as a secretary in Legal Eagles (1986). A few years later, she got a bigger role as Mae Thompson in the 1989 movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. This movie was a big hit!
Her career really took off when she was cast as Buffy's mother in the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This show was about a teenage girl who fought vampires and demons. The show's creator, Joss Whedon, picked Kristine because she seemed very warm and kind. He also thought she looked a lot like Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played her daughter Buffy.
Kristine was a regular on the show for the first five seasons. After that, she left the show but came back for a few special appearances in later seasons.
After her time on Buffy, Kristine decided to try something new. She took a photography course at Santa Monica College. She then started her own business, specializing in taking portraits of people.
In 2008, she appeared in a TV miniseries called Comanche Moon. She also had a guest role in an episode of the TV show New Amsterdam. Kristine also used her voice acting skills for the English version of the animated movie The Cat Returns, where she voiced Haru's Mother.

Kristine Sutherland is married to an actor named John Pankow. They have one daughter together.
