Kristine Sutherland (born Kristine Young on April 17, 1955) is an American actress. She is best known for playing Buffy Summers' mother, Joyce Summers, on the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She appeared in this show from 1997 to 2003. Kristine also played Mae Thompson in the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989).

Her Early Life and Name Change
Kristine Sutherland was born Kristine Young in Boise, Idaho. She changed her last name because another actress had a very similar name. This caused confusion. She chose "Sutherland" after her cat. Her cat was named "Donald" after the actor Donald Sutherland. Interestingly, Donald Sutherland was in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. Kristine is not related to Donald Sutherland or his family.
She went to high school in Lexington, Kentucky. There, she was part of the drama program. After graduating, she studied at the University of Kentucky.
Her Acting Journey
Kristine Sutherland's first movie role was in 1986. She played a secretary in the film Legal Eagles. In 1989, she appeared as Mae Thompson in the popular movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
Her career got a big boost when she joined the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She played Joyce Summers, who was Buffy's mom. The show's creator, Joss Whedon, chose Kristine because she seemed very warm. He also thought she looked a lot like Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played her daughter Buffy. Kristine was a regular on the show for the first five seasons. She made a few guest appearances in the last two seasons.
After Buffy, Kristine took a photography course. She then started her own studio. She specialized in taking portraits. In 2008, she was in a TV miniseries called Comanche Moon. She also had a guest role in an episode of New Amsterdam. Kristine also lent her voice to the English version of the animated movie The Cat Returns.
