Krithika (whose real name was Mathuram Bhoothalingam) was a talented writer from India. She wrote many plays and short stories in both the Tamil language and English. Krithika is known for her interesting stories for adults and her fun books for children.
About Krithika's Life
Krithika was born as Mathuram in 1915. Her family lived in Mumbai, India. When she was young, she moved to Delhi. She spent a lot of her life there.
She married Subrahmanya Bhoothalingam. He was an officer in the Indian Civil Service. They had a daughter named Mina Swaminathan. Krithika lived to be 93 years old. She passed away in 2009.
Krithika's Writing Career
Mathuram started writing when she was young. She used the pen name "Krithika." Her first novel in Tamil was called Puhai Naduvil. This book looked at how government offices worked.
Later, she wrote many stories for children. She also wrote novels and plays. Some of her stories were based on old Indian tales called puranas.
Writing in English
Krithika also started writing in English. She was one of the first Indian writers to publish children's books regularly in English. When she wrote for kids, she often used her real name, Mathuram.
One of her important English books is Movement in Stone. This book explores early Chola temples. It also looks at how Pallava art influenced them. Another book, Yoga for Living (1996), shares ideas about India today.
Krithika wrote a book called Vasaveswaram. This story focused on women. It talked about the challenges they faced in society. She also wrote books about famous Hindu Epics like the Ramayana.
Krithika had a close friend named Chitti (P. G. Sundararajan). He was also a famous writer. They wrote letters to each other for over 30 years. These letters were later collected into a book called Lettered Dialogue.
