Kulfi is a popular restaurant located in Portland, Oregon. It is known for its delicious, all-natural fruit popsicles. These tasty treats are inspired by a traditional Indian frozen dessert that shares the same name.
What Kulfi Serves
Kulfi offers many different popsicle flavors. They have special options for people who prefer vegan foods. Some vegan flavors include jackfruit-coconut-lime and spicy watermelon. They also have Vietnamese coffee popsicles, made with coffee beans from a local company called Portland Cà Phê.
Besides popsicles, Kulfi has other treats. You might find a ricotta raspberry cheesecake bar with graham cracker crumbles. Other popular flavors include chai, marionberry cheesecake, pistachio, rose water, and saffron. There is even a fun "Cookie Monster" popsicle that has real cookie pieces inside!
The most popular flavor, as of 2022, is the mango lassi popsicle. It is made with sweet mango, sugar, and yogurt. Kulfi also makes a unique cream soda float. This special drink uses an upside-down mango lassi popsicle with orange soda, whipped cream, and sprinkles. During certain times of the year, they offer a colorful "Pride pop." Kulfi also created peanut butter Oreo popsicles for a special event in 2021.
Inside the restaurant, you can see a special painting. It is a tribute to Gabbar, who was the owner's beloved Labrador Retriever dog.
How Kulfi Started
Kulfi is owned by a married couple, Kiran Cheema and Gagan Aulakh. Their business began during the COVID-19 pandemic. At first, it was a "pop-up" business. This means they sold their desserts from temporary locations.
In mid-2021, they were known as Kulfi Creamery and Kulfi PDX. They sold their treats at different places and events. These included the Come Thru Market, the Montavilla Farmers Market, and the Portland Flea. They often used a bicycle ice cream cart with a bright rainbow umbrella.
In 2022, Kulfi announced exciting news. They planned to open their own permanent shop. This "brick and mortar" store opened on April 30. It is located on Alberta Street in the Vernon neighborhood of northeast Portland. The new shop offers four regular flavors and eight rotating flavors. They also serve falooda, which is another type of cold dessert.
According to Lizzy Acker from The Oregonian newspaper, Kiran Cheema can make 160 popsicles at one time!
