Northeast Portland is one of the six main parts of Portland, Oregon. It is a large and interesting area with many different kinds of neighborhoods.

Exploring Northeast Portland

Northeast Portland is known for its wide variety of neighborhoods. Some areas, like Irvington and the Alameda Ridge, have very old and expensive homes. Other nearby places, such as King, are more working-class neighborhoods. This means they have homes that are usually more affordable for families.

Inner and Outer Sections

Because Northeast Portland is so big, it can be thought of in two main parts: inner and outer sections. These sections differ in their history, culture, and how they are spread out geographically.

The inner Northeast neighborhoods are closer to the city center. Areas around Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. were historically home to a large African-American community. These neighborhoods have a rich history and strong community ties.

Changing Communities

Over time, the communities in inner Northeast Portland have been changing. This process is called gentrification. Gentrification happens when new people move into a neighborhood, often leading to new businesses and higher housing costs. This can change the look and feel of the area. For example, in the King neighborhood, the number of African-American residents decreased significantly between 2000 and 2010.

Fun Places to Visit

Northeast Portland has many exciting places to visit, especially for shopping and entertainment.

  • The Lloyd District is a busy area with many shops and businesses. City planners want to make the Lloyd District even more lively. They plan to add more homes and different types of businesses there.
  • The Alberta Arts District (Portland, Oregon) is famous for its art galleries, unique shops, and lively street events.
  • The Hollywood District is another popular spot. It has shops, restaurants, and the historic Hollywood Theatre.

Other well-known neighborhoods in inner Northeast Portland include Alameda, Grant Park, Sullivan's Gulch, and Laurelhurst. These areas are known for their beautiful homes and tree-lined streets.

Entertainment Hubs

Near the border where Northeast Portland meets Southeast Portland, there's a lively area close to the Burnside Bridge. This spot has become a popular place for entertainment and social gatherings. By 2006, this area was so well-known that people started calling it LoBU. This nickname stands for "Lower Burnside," referring to its location.
