Kuljak Island, also known as Black Swan Island, is a special island in the Swan River. It's not a natural island; people actually built it! You can find it between Ron Courtney Island (further up the river) and Heirisson Island (further down). Kuljak Island is located east of Maylands Peninsula and south of the Garratt Road Bridge. Many smaller, human-made islets surround Kuljak Island. The entire island is inside the suburb of Ascot.
How Kuljak Island Was Made
Kuljak Island was created in 1997. Workers dug two channels as part of a big building project called Ascot Waters. These channels connect a human-made wetland to the Swan River. By digging these channels, they cut off a piece of land. This land used to be a rubbish dump, also called a sanitary landfill. The dump was used by the local council for 25 years. It closed in the early 1980s. When the channels were finished, the old dump site became Kuljak Island.
Enjoying Kuljak Island
You can get to Kuljak Island by car using Tidewater Way. There is also a special bridge for people walking or cycling. This pedestrian bridge starts from Samphire Street. The City of Belmont has mapped out a walking trail on the island. This trail includes paved paths that lead onto and around Kuljak Island. It's a great place to explore and enjoy nature.
