Kumbazha is a busy junction located in the heart of Pathanamthitta Town, in the state of Kerala, India. The peaceful Achenkovil river flows gently through this historic area. Kumbazha is also important because it's the end point of the Thiruvalla - Kumbazha (SH-7) road, also known as the T.K. Road.

This town was once a very active marketplace. Its name, Kumbazha, comes from the Malayalam word "Kumbhi," which means elephant. This suggests that elephants might have been important here in the past.

Where is Kumbazha Located?

Kumbazha Junction is about 3 kilometers away from Pathanamthitta Central Junction. It is seen as the eastern exit point of Pathanamthitta town. This spot is where two major state highways meet. These are the T.K.Road (SH - 07) and the Main Eastern Highway (Punalur-Pathanamthitta-Muvattupuzha Road / SH - 08).

A new road, the proposed MC road (Thiruvananthapuram–Angamaly Greenfield Highway), is planned to pass through Kumbazha. This will make the town even more connected.

Important Religious Places

Kumbazha is a key route for people visiting the Malayalappuzha Devi Temple. The town also has several other important religious sites. These include the Valanchuzhy Temple, St. Simeon's Cathedral, and St. Mary's Orthodox Valiya Cathedral.

Kumbazha has a large Christian community. You can find churches in almost every part of the town. The Kumbazha St. Mary's Orthodox Valiya Cathedral is the oldest church in this area. St. Simeon's Cathedral is known for being the largest church in Kumbazha.

Festivals and Celebrations

The Samyuktha Christmas Celebration in Kumbazha is a lively event held every year on December 25. It brings together the Christian community and welcomes people from all backgrounds. In 2022, this festival marked its 50th consecutive year.

This celebration is considered the biggest Christmas event in Central Travancore. Thousands of people attend it every year. Churches across the town work together to organize many activities. These include carol singing, nativity plays, and community feasts. The streets are decorated, and special services create a festive mood. This celebration truly shows the spirit of unity and harmony in Kumbazha. It highlights the town's strong Christian heritage and brings everyone together for an annual festive show.
