Kutsuki Mototsuna (朽木 元綱, 1549 – October 12, 1632) was a brave samurai leader in ancient Japan. He lived during the exciting Azuchi-Momoyama period and the peaceful Edo period.
Mototsuna was born in 1549. His father was Kutsuki Harutsuna. The Kutsuki family was very powerful in an area called Kutsuki-tani, located in Ōmi Province. When Mototsuna was just two years old, his father died in a battle. Mototsuna then became the head of his family. His childhood name was Takewakamaru.
Early Life and Service
Mototsuna started his career by serving the Ashikaga shogunate, which was the military government of Japan at the time. He was part of a special guard unit called the Hokosyu.
In 1570, a famous leader named Oda Nobunaga was in trouble. He was fighting the Asakura clan and needed to retreat safely. Mototsuna helped Nobunaga escape through his family's territory in Kutsuki. This act of help was very important for Nobunaga.
After Nobunaga passed away in 1582, Mototsuna began to serve another powerful leader, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi continued to unite Japan, and Mototsuna played a part in his plans.
The Battle of Sekigahara
One of the most important events in Japanese history was the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. This battle decided who would rule Japan. At first, Kutsuki Mototsuna was on the side of Ishida Mitsunari, who was fighting against Tokugawa Ieyasu. Mototsuna was part of the forces led by Otani Yoshitsugu.
However, during the battle, Mototsuna made a big decision. Along with other commanders like Kobayakawa Hideaki, Wakisaka Yasuharu, Ogawa Suketada, and Akaza Naoyasu, he switched sides. They joined Tokugawa Ieyasu's army. This change helped Ieyasu win the battle. After the victory, Ieyasu allowed Mototsuna to keep his land because of his actions.
Family Life
Kutsuki Mototsuna had a family. His father was Kutsuki Harutsuna. His mother was the daughter of Asukai Masatsuna. Mototsuna was married to the daughter of a person named Gyōe.
He had several children who continued the Kutsuki family line:
- Kutsuki Nobutsuna (born in 1582)
- Kutsuki Tomotsuna (born in 1599)
- Kutsuki Tanetsuna (born in 1605)
- A daughter who married Hori Naomasa.
