Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kwatkwat were an Aboriginal Australian group who lived in the area now known as the State of Victoria. Some experts believe they were part of a larger group of people called the Yorta Yorta and Pangerang nations.

Traditional Lands

The Kwatkwat people had their own special traditional lands, often called their "Country." According to a researcher named Norman Tindale, their territory covered about 1,800 square miles (4,700 km²). This land stretched along the southern side of the Murray River. It ran from just above where the Goulburn River joins the Murray, all the way south to Indigo Creek near Barnawartha. Their Country also included the meeting point of the King River and the Ovens River.
