Kyam Joseph Maher is an Australian politician and lawyer. He holds important roles in the South Australian government. Since March 2022, he has been the Attorney-General of South Australia. This means he is the state's chief legal advisor. He is also the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.
He became a member of the South Australian Legislative Council in 2012. He represents the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party. Before 2022, he served in the government's top team, called the Cabinet of South Australia, from 2015 to 2018. He was also the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council during that time.

Understanding Kyam Maher's Background
Kyam Maher has Aboriginal Tasmanian heritage. He grew up in Mount Gambier. He went to Grant High School there. After high school, he moved to study law and economics. He attended the University of Adelaide.
Before becoming a politician, Kyam Maher worked as a lawyer. He also worked for other politicians. Later, he became the state secretary for the Australian Labor Party in South Australia. This role involves managing the party's activities in the state.

Joining the Legislative Council
In 2012, Kyam Maher joined the South Australian Legislative Council. This is a part of the state's parliament. He took the place of another member, Bob Sneath. Maher was then re-elected in the 2014 state election.
Serving in Government Roles
In February 2015, Kyam Maher was chosen to be part of the state's Cabinet. The Cabinet is a group of top ministers who lead different areas of government. From 2015 to 2018, he held several important jobs. These included Minister for Manufacturing and Innovation, and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation. He was the first Aboriginal person to be the South Australian Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.
In January 2016, he was also made the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council. This role means he helps guide the government's plans through that part of parliament.
Current Leadership Positions
After the Labor Party won the 2022 state election, Kyam Maher received new important roles. On March 24, he became the Attorney-General of South Australia. This is a very significant legal position in the state. He also became Minister for Aboriginal Affairs again. Additionally, he is the Minister for Industrial Relations and Public Sector.
For the second time, he became the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council. Kyam Maher made history as the first initiated Aboriginal man in Australia to become an Attorney-General.
