Littlehampton is a small town, or 'village', in the beautiful Adelaide Hills of South Australia. It's located on the Old Princes Highway and is about a 35-minute drive from Adelaide's city center using the South Eastern Freeway.
In 2016, a count of people called a census showed that about 3,522 people lived in Littlehampton.
Littlehampton was started in 1849 by a man named Benjamin Gray. He named it after his hometown, also called Littlehampton, in a place called Sussex far away.
By 1890, Littlehampton was a busy place with lots of factories. There was a sawmill (for cutting wood), a brewery (for making drinks), and places that made jams, sauces, bacon, and even wattle extract. There were also five different factories making bricks!
One of these brick factories, called Littlehampton Bricks, is still working today! It started in 1913 from an older brickyard nearby.
An old church built in 1862 on Main Street was one of the oldest churches still used in South Australia. It stopped holding services in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Story of Subterranean Clover
Did you know that something very important for farming happened near Littlehampton? The very first time someone collected seeds of a special plant called Trifolium subterraneum (Subterranean Clover) to sell them was done by a person named Amos Howard. This happened about two kilometers east of Littlehampton.
This type of clover was later named 'Mount Barker'. It is still used by farmers today to help their animals have good pastures to eat.
Littlehampton's Fire Service
The Littlehampton Country Fire Service (CFS) is made up of amazing volunteers. These volunteers help keep the community safe from fires. They are part of a larger group called the Heysen group, which helps coordinate fire services in the area.
