Kyosen Ōhashi (大橋 巨泉, Ōhashi Kyosen, March 22, 1934 – July 12, 2016) was a very famous Japanese television host and writer. He was known for his fun personality. He also worked for a short time in Japan's main government body, called the Diet. His real name was Ōhashi Katsumi.
Early Life and Education
Kyosen Ōhashi was born in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. This was on March 22, 1934. He spent his childhood growing up in Chiba Prefecture. Later, he went to Waseda University. However, he decided to leave university before finishing his studies.
A Career in Television
Ōhashi became a popular face on Japanese television. He hosted many shows. He was also a talented writer. People enjoyed his unique style and humor. He became a well-known personality across Japan.
Life Beyond Japan
After a successful career, Ōhashi decided to "semi-retire." This meant he spent a lot of his time outside Japan. He loved to travel. During the summer, he often stayed in Canada. In the northern hemisphere's winter, he would go to Australia and New Zealand. In these countries, he ran his own business. It was called "OK Gift Shop." The "OK" stood for Ohashi Kyosen.
Serving in Government
Kyosen Ōhashi also had a brief career in politics. He was a member of the House of Councillors. This is one of the two parts of Japan's parliament, the Diet. When he left this role, another person took his place. This was Marutei Tsurunen. Tsurunen was special because he was the first person of European background to serve in the Diet. He was also openly born outside Japan.
