Life of Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich

Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich was likely the son of King Itzamnaaj Kʼawiil. He took over from Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam, who was probably his guardian or a ruler who helped him.

Becoming King and Early Actions

Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich became king just days after his predecessor died. He honored his predecessor by recording his death and that of his wife on a special stone carving called Hieroglyphic Bench 1.

It's possible that Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich was still young when he became king. This might have made enemies think it was a good time to attack Dos Pilas. Another idea is that he wanted to prove himself as a strong military leader. Even before he became king, he captured a lord from a place called Ahkul. After this, he called himself "Master of the Ahkul Lord."

Military Victories and Influence

More of his military successes are recorded on Hieroglyphic Stairway 3. This carving tells us about captures from cities like El Chorro, Yaxchilan, and Motul de San José. These victories showed his power and control over the region.

Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich also had influence over other rulers. For example, Yichʼaak Bʼalam, the king of Seibal, performed important rituals under Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich's supervision. This shows that Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich was a respected and powerful figure among the Maya kings.

The End of His Reign

A hieroglyphic stairway found at Tamarindito has a carving that says Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich "went out." This phrase often means that someone fled or escaped. This suggests that his reign might have ended with him leaving Dos Pilas.

We do not know exactly when or where Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich died. His reign ended around 761, and he was the last king of Dos Pilas.
