L'Escala is a lovely town in Catalonia, Spain. It is located in the Girona province, within an area called Alt Empordà. L'Escala sits right on the beautiful Costa Brava coastline. It is found between the southern part of the Gulf of Roses and a pretty bay called Cala Montgó.
This town is famous for two main things: being an important fishing port and a popular place for tourists to visit. L'Escala even has a special festival to celebrate its well-known anchovies!

History and Culture
L'Escala has a rich history, with ancient ruins and important buildings.
Ancient Empúries
One of the most exciting historical sites here is Empúries. These are the ruins of very old settlements. You can see remains from the Phoenician people and the Romans. Some of these ruins date back to 580 BC, which is a very long time ago! Exploring Empúries is like taking a trip back in time.
The Salt Warehouse
Another important historical building is the Alfolí de la Sal. It is also known as the Pòsit Vell. This building was built in the 1600s. It used to be a warehouse where people stored salt. Salt was very important back then to keep fish fresh. Today, this old warehouse is a protected historical monument.
Famous Author
L'Escala was also the home of a famous writer named Caterina Albert. She wrote under the name Víctor Català. She lived from 1869 to 1966 and wrote many interesting novels.

The GR 92 Footpath
The GR 92 is a very long walking path. It follows the Mediterranean coast of Spain. This path goes right through L'Escala. You can walk from Sant Martí d'Empúries to Torroella de Montgrí along this trail. It is a fantastic way to see the beautiful coastal scenery.
Population Growth
L'Escala has grown quite a bit over the years. In 1900, about 2,515 people lived there. By 2001, the population had more than doubled to 5,823. In 2009, it reached over 10,000 people! This shows how popular the town has become.
