Līgatne is a small town in Latvia, located in the Vidzeme region. It sits right by the Gauja River. The town started as a village in the 1800s, growing around a paper mill that is still there today. Līgatne officially became a town in 1993.

Exploring Līgatne's Nature Trails
Līgatne is famous for its amazing Līgatne Nature Trails. These trails are part of the Gauja National Park. You can find them in the forest on the left side of the Gauja River. It's a great place to explore Latvia's beautiful nature.
Activities on the Trails
The nature reserve has many paths for walking and cycling. There's even a special route if you want to drive through. If you love horses, you can go horse-riding here. There are also places for camping if you want to stay overnight.

The Līgatne Nature Trails were created in 1975. Their main goal is to protect and show off the many different plants and animals that live in Latvia. It's like a special home for them.
Animals at the Reserve
Many animals at the reserve have been rescued. Some were hurt, while others were tamed and couldn't live on their own. Here, they get a safe place to live. You can see animals like bears, lynxes, elk, European bison, roe deer, and red deer.
Unique Natural Features
The Gauja river valley is full of interesting natural sights. You'll find cool rock formations, thick forests, and pretty meadows. Some special spots include Jumpraviezis rock, Katrīniezis rock, and Gūdu cliffs. There's also a rare sandstone canyon called Paparžu grava, which means "Fern Glen." It's known for its many ferns.
Līgatne's Sandstone Caves
Līgatne also has many caves dug into the sandstone banks. These caves were used as cellars by the paper mill workers long ago, during the time of the Russian Empire. They are a unique part of the town's history.

- Gauja River Ferry: You can take a ferry across the Gauja River. Just remember, it closes during winter.
- Old Līgatne Town: Explore the town itself! It has special wooden houses from the 1800s. There are 30 unique row houses where the paper mill workers used to live.
- Līgatne Paper Mill: This historic paper mill operated from 1816 to 2016. Now, you can visit it and learn about how paper was made. It's a great example of industrial history.
- Zvārtes Rock: This is a cool rock formation with a forest trail nearby. You can also visit Witches' Meadow on the banks of the Amata River.
- Ķempji Village: This village has an old church and a water mill worth seeing.
