Leonard Smith studied at Long Island University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. Later, he continued his studies at New Jersey City University. There, he received a Master of Arts degree in Psychology and Counseling.
Serving the Community
Leonard Smith has served in various government roles. These roles allowed him to help the people of New Jersey. He worked at both the city and state levels.
As a City Councilman
Before his state roles, Smith was a city council member in Jersey City. He served three terms as a councilman. For four of those years, he was the City Council President. This role meant he led the city council meetings.
As Acting Mayor
In 2004, Leonard Smith became the Acting Mayor of Jersey City. This happened after the death of Mayor Glenn Cunningham. Smith served as Acting Mayor from May 2004 until November 2004. A special election was held to choose a new mayor. Smith ran in this election but Jerramiah T. Healy won.
In the State Senate
In 2003, Smith also served in the New Jersey Senate. He filled a vacant seat for a short time. This was after State Senator Joseph Charles resigned. Smith was chosen by Democratic Party leaders for this role. He served in the Senate from November 2003 to January 2004.
In the General Assembly
Leonard Smith was a member of the State Assembly. He represented the 31st legislative district. He served one term, from January 2008 to January 2010. In the Assembly, he worked on different committees. These included the Higher Education Committee. He also served on the Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee.
Beyond Politics
After his time in the State Senate, Smith worked as an Undersheriff for Hudson County. An Undersheriff helps the Sheriff with law enforcement duties. He took a break from this job to be Acting Mayor. After his time as Acting Mayor, he returned to his role as Undersheriff.
