Glenn Dale Cunningham (born September 16, 1943 – died May 25, 2004) was an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Cunningham made history as the first African American Mayor of Jersey City. This is New Jersey's second-largest city. He won the election for mayor in 2001. Cunningham also served as a New Jersey State Senator.
After Cunningham passed away, L. Harvey Smith became the acting mayor of Jersey City. Later, Judge Jerramiah T. Healy was elected to finish Cunningham's term. Joseph Doria took Cunningham's place in the State Senate for a short time. He then won a special election to keep the seat.

Glenn Cunningham's Early Life and Career
Glenn Cunningham grew up in Jersey City. He went to Henry Snyder High School. In 2018, he was honored by being included in the school's first hall of fame class.
Before becoming mayor, Cunningham had an impressive career. He was a Marine. He also served for 25 years in the Jersey City Police Department.
Public Service Roles
President Bill Clinton appointed Cunningham to lead the United States Marshals Service Office in New Jersey. This was a very important role.
Cunningham also held several other public service positions. He was a member of the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders. He also served as the Jersey City Council President. In addition, he was the public safety director for Hudson County.
His Passing
Glenn Cunningham died on May 25, 2004, at Greenville Hospital in Jersey City. He was 60 years old and passed away from a heart attack. He was buried with special honors.

Glenn Cunningham's wife, Sandra Bolden Cunningham, also became a political leader. She has made her own mark in Jersey City politics.
Mrs. Cunningham considered running for her husband's State Senate seat. She also thought about running for the State Assembly. In 2007, Mrs. Cunningham won the Democratic primary election for State Senate. She was then elected to the Senate in November 2007.
