He decided to enroll at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA). After graduating with an associate degree, he worked as an assistant chef. He then became an executive chef, which means he was in charge of the kitchen.

Culinary Career
Chef Ryan traveled to France to gain more experience in French restaurants. While there, the CIA asked him to come back and teach. He returned to the school as a chef-instructor in 1982.

As president, Ryan has overseen many important changes. He expanded student housing and built a new admissions center at the Hyde Park campus. He also launched new degree programs at the school's California campus. In 2008, the college opened its second branch campus in San Antonio, Texas.
In 2008, some faculty members voted on their confidence in his leadership. However, the college's board of trustees fully supported him and extended his contract.
