Early Life and Education

Tim Ryan was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 16, 1958. When he was 13, he started working as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. By the time he was in high school, he knew he wanted to be a chef.

He decided to enroll at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA). After graduating with an associate degree, he worked as an assistant chef. He then became an executive chef, which means he was in charge of the kitchen.

Ryan continued his education, earning a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from the University of New Haven. He also earned a Doctor of Education (EdD) from the University of Pennsylvania.

Culinary Career

Chef Ryan traveled to France to gain more experience in French restaurants. While there, the CIA asked him to come back and teach. He returned to the school as a chef-instructor in 1982.

Later that year, he helped create the school's American Bounty Restaurant. He worked his way up through many different jobs at the college. These roles included leading the culinary education department and becoming the executive vice president.

Leading the CIA

In 2001, the CIA's president, Ferdinand Metz, decided to step down. After a search, the college's board of trustees chose Tim Ryan to be the new president. He officially started his role on November 1, 2001.

As president, Ryan has overseen many important changes. He expanded student housing and built a new admissions center at the Hyde Park campus. He also launched new degree programs at the school's California campus. In 2008, the college opened its second branch campus in San Antonio, Texas.

In 2008, some faculty members voted on their confidence in his leadership. However, the college's board of trustees fully supported him and extended his contract.

Tim Ryan has received many honors for his work in the food industry. In 2010, he was added to the James Beard Foundation's Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America. This group includes the most successful food and drink professionals in the United States.
