La Bisbal d'Empordà is a charming town in Catalonia, Spain. It is the main town of a region called Baix Empordà. This area is known as a comarca, which is like a county in Catalonia.
The town is about 29 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of Girona. It is also close to the coastal towns of Palafrugell and Palamós. La Bisbal sits on the edge of a hilly area called the Gavarres. The Daró river-bed, which is often dry, runs through the town.
The name La Bisbal comes from the Catalan word for "bishop," which is 'bisbe'. This is because bishops from Girona owned the town for a very long time, starting from the time of Charlemagne. Long ago, the town was built on an old Roman settlement called Fontanetum.

A Look at History
La Bisbal d'Empordà has a rich history. The town has been around since at least 901 AD. That's when the church of Santa Maria de la Bisbal was first dedicated. The church you see today was built much later, in the 17th century, in a style called Baroque.
A very old fortified palace, built partly in the Romanesque style, stands proudly in the town center. This palace was once home to the bishops.
Important Battles
After the French Revolution in 1789, many French people moved to La Bisbal. The town saw some fighting during the Napoleonic Wars, also known as the Peninsular War. In 1810, a Spanish general named Henry O'Donnell won an important battle here against French forces. Later, in 1874, during the Third Carlist War, another group called the Carlists briefly took over the town.
What La Bisbal is Known For
La Bisbal is famous for its pottery. Many people work making beautiful ceramics here. You can find many shops selling pottery.
Besides pottery, farming is also important to the town's economy.
The town used to have a train line that connected it to other places like Girona and Palamós. This train ran until 1956.
La Bisbal is also a special place for the Sardana. This is a traditional Catalan folk dance, and the town is one of its main centers.
