The La Chevrotière River is a waterway in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Saint Lawrence River from its northwest side. This river passes through the towns of Portneuf, Saint-Gilbert, and Deschambault-Grondines. It is located in the Portneuf Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region.
The area around the La Chevrotière River is mainly used for farming. Forestry is also an important activity here. Roads like Quebec Route 138 and Quebec Route 363 help people get around the river valley.
During winter, the river usually freezes from early December to late March. It's safest to walk on the ice from late December to early March. The amount of water in the river changes with the seasons and how much rain falls. The river's water level is highest in March or April due to spring floods.

River's Location and Journey
The La Chevrotière River is on the north side of the Saint Lawrence River. It's about halfway between the cities of Trois-Rivières and Quebec City. To its west is the Sainte-Anne River, and to its east is the Portneuf River.
Where the River Starts
The La Chevrotière River begins in a swampy area in the town of Portneuf. This starting point is near a road called "chemin de rang de la Chapelle." It's also about 3.6 kilometers east of a bend in the Sainte-Anne River.
How the River Flows
From its source, the La Chevrotière River flows for about 26.3 kilometers (or 16.9 kilometers in a straight line). It drops 126 meters in elevation along its path.
- It first flows south through forests.
- Then it winds southwest through farms and forests, passing by roads like the Mill road.
- It continues south, winding through agricultural areas.
- The river passes west of the village of Saint-Gilbert.
- It then turns southeast, crossing the Gravel road and the 3rd range road.
- The river also crosses Quebec Route 363 and flows near the hamlet of La Chevrotière.
- Finally, it flows southwest, passing under bridges like the Saint-Éloi Bridge and two bridges of Quebec Autoroute 40.
- It crosses Quebec Route 138 before reaching its mouth.
Where the River Ends
The La Chevrotière River empties into the Saint Lawrence River. This meeting point is about 3.2 kilometers southeast of the railway. It's also near the villages of Grondines and Donnacona.
Origin of the River's Name
The name "La Chevrotière" comes from a person named François de Chavigny Lachevrotière. He became the owner of a piece of land called the fief of La Tesserie in 1674. By 1698, this land was known as La Chevrotière. The name of the river was officially recognized on March 9, 1988.
