La Colonia became an official district on June 11, 2012. This happened because of a special government decision.
Where is La Colonia?
Size and Height
La Colonia covers an area of about 39.1 square kilometers. Its highest point is 180 meters above sea level. However, most of the land is very flat, only about 5 meters above sea level.
Location and Neighbors
This district is located in the central Caribbean region of Costa Rica. It shares borders with other districts. To the east, it borders Jiménez. To the south, west, and north, it borders Guápiles.
Main Village
The main village in La Colonia is called San Rafael. It is about 6 kilometers northwest of Guápiles. San Rafael is also about 68.7 kilometers northeast of San José, which is the capital city of Costa Rica.

The first official count of people in La Colonia will happen in 2021. This is because the district was created after the 2011 census.
