La Fatarella is a small town, also called a municipality, located in northern Terra Alta. This area is part of the Ribera d'Ebre region in Spain. It's a place with a long and interesting history.

History of La Fatarella
Ancient Beginnings: A Watchtower's Tale
One of the oldest buildings in La Fatarella was a Muslim watchtower. This tower stood where the chapel of Mare de Déu of the Misericòrdia is today. Watchtowers were used to keep an eye on the surrounding land. The name of the town, La Fatarella, might even come from an old Arab word for "tower." While the original tower is no longer visible, the spot where it stood offers amazing views of the Terra Alta region.
Winding Streets and Medieval Walls
La Fatarella has many winding and uneven streets. You might notice special architectural features called perxes. These are parts of a street that are covered by envigats, which are stone arches connecting different houses. The town as we see it today began in the Middle Ages. You can still see this history in the old stone houses, some with carved symbols above their doorways.
During the Middle Ages, the town was surrounded by strong walls. These walls helped protect the people from dangers like robbers and even wolves. The walls were very thick, about 80 to 120 centimeters wide. This defensive system was used for a long time, even into the 17th century. Eventually, more people moved to La Fatarella, and the town grew beyond its walls. Today, you can still find parts of these old walls.
A Place in Modern History: The Battle of the Ebro
La Fatarella, especially the nearby Serra de la Fatarella mountain range, played an important role in the Spanish Civil War. It was one of the main locations for a major conflict called the Battle of the Ebro. To remember the people who were affected by this battle, a special monument was built in 2010.
