La Fuensanta is a famous portrait painting by the Spanish artist Julio Romero de Torres. It shows María Teresa López González, who was one of Torres's favorite models. In the painting, María Teresa rests her arms on a shiny copper pot.
Julio Romero de Torres finished this painting in the autumn of 1929. At the same time, he also completed two other well-known artworks: La Chiquita Piconera and Bodegas Cruz Conde. The name "Fuensanta" is a Spanish girl's name that means "holy fountain."
María Teresa López González was born in Argentina. After World War I, her family moved to Córdoba, which was Torres's hometown. She first posed for Torres when she was just fourteen years old. She quickly became one of his most important models. Her face is now often linked to Torres's art.
Experts at Sotheby's auction house have called La Fuensanta a perfect example of Andalucian beauty. This painting was so famous that it was even featured on the 100 peseta banknote for 25 years!
Where is La Fuensanta Now?
The history of who owned La Fuensanta was mostly unknown for a long time. After it was shown at the Ibero-American Exposition in Seville in 1930, its location became a mystery.
In 1994, a person from Argentina bought the painting. Later, in November 2007, the painting was sold again by Sotheby's to a private buyer. The Spanish Ministry of Culture tried to buy the painting for Spain. However, the price at the auction was very high, reaching €1,173,400 euros, which was too much.
