La Jolla is a small neighborhood located in Placentia, California. It's one of many neighborhoods you can find in Orange County. La Jolla has a diverse community, with many residents of Hispanic background, along with Caucasian and African-American residents. This area used to be called La Jolla Colony. For a while, it was not officially part of Anaheim. Today, La Jolla is a proud part of the City of Placentia, just like the nearby community of Atwood. The 57 Freeway now runs through La Jolla, but a special bridge helps connect both sides for cars and people.

History of La Jolla
La Jolla has an interesting past, including a major natural event.
The Great Flood of 1936
In 1936, Orange County experienced a very big flood. This flood caused a lot of damage in La Jolla. Almost every building in the area was destroyed. Only a few structures survived this powerful flood. These included McFadden School, a small church, and about seven blocks of homes.
From Colony to City
La Jolla was once known as La Jolla Colony, Placentia. At one point, it was not considered part of Anaheim. Over time, it officially became part of the City of Placentia. This change helped shape the neighborhood into what it is today.
Living in La Jolla
La Jolla is mostly a place where people live. It has a mix of older homes and apartment buildings.
Homes and Apartments
The neighborhood is mainly made up of single-family homes. Many of these houses are older, giving the area a classic feel. There are also several apartment complexes in La Jolla. This provides different housing options for residents.
Local Businesses
La Jolla does not have many large businesses. Instead, it has a few small, independent neighborhood markets. These markets serve the daily needs of the community.
Gonzales Market
One of the main stores is Gonzales Market. It is located on the east side of the 57 Freeway. People believe this market was built soon after the big flood in 1936.
Pee Wee's Market
On the west side of the freeway, you'll find Pee Wee's Market. The Magaña family, who have lived in Placentia for a long time, opened this market around 1960.
Schools and Parks
Education and green spaces are important parts of the La Jolla community.
McFadden and Melrose Schools
The corner of La Jolla Street and Melrose was once the site of McFadden Elementary School. This school was taken down in the early 1980s. However, a new school has since been built in its place. The new school is called Melrose Elementary School.
McFadden Park
Even though the old school is gone, the park next to the new Melrose Elementary School is still known as McFadden Park. It provides a green space for children and families to enjoy.
