The bull ring in La Línea de la Concepción is a famous building in southern Spain. This town is very close to Gibraltar. The bull ring, known in Spanish as Plaza de Toros de la Línea de la Concepción, first opened its doors in May 1883. It is a historic place where bullfights and other events have taken place for many years.

The Bullring's Unique Design

This bull ring is quite special because it has an unusual shape. Most bull rings are perfectly round, but this one has 49 sides! Even with so many sides, it still looks almost circular. The building also has eleven different entrances, making it easy for many people to come and go.

The architect who designed this interesting building was Adolfo del Castillo. It was built on a place called Plaza de Arenal. Construction started in 1880 and finished in 1883. This means it was built only about 13 years after the town of La Línea de la Concepción was officially created. Today, it is one of the oldest buildings in the town.

A Place for the Community

The bull ring was built in a style typical of the Andalusia region of Spain. It quickly became an important meeting place for people. Many visitors, including those from nearby Gibraltar, would come here. This might explain why the bull ring was built to hold 6,000 people. At the time, the town itself only had about 5,000 residents!

In the 1980s, parts of the building were removed. However, the Spanish Government still recognizes it as a very important historical site. They call it a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means "Property of Cultural Interest."

Size and Past Events

The main part of the bull ring, where events happen, is about 59 meters (194 feet) across. This large area covers more than 5,000 square meters (53,800 square feet). The entire building, including all its parts, is about 89 meters (292 feet) wide.

Besides bullfights, the bull ring has hosted other exciting events. For example, in 1894, the famous Montgolfier brothers even put on a hot air balloon show here!

The Feria de la Línea

Today, bullfights at the Plaza de Toros usually happen only once a year. They mark the end of the Feria de la Línea. A Feria is a traditional Spanish festival, and the one in La Línea is celebrated in mid-July. It's a time for fun, music, and cultural events for everyone in the town.
