Legends of La Mujer Muerta
Many old stories and legends try to explain the name of La Mujer Muerta. These tales often describe how the mountains got their unique shape. The peaks of La Pinareja, Peña el Oso, and Pico de Pasapán together form the shape of a sleeping or dead woman when seen from the city.
The Broken Heart Legend
One popular story tells of a woman whose husband went off to war. He promised to return and marry her. Sadly, he never came back. The woman was so heartbroken that she passed away. The legend says her body then turned into the mountain range.
In this story, the peak of La Pinareja forms the woman's face as she lies on her back. The peak of Peña el Oso represents her arms crossed over her chest. Finally, the Pico de Pasapán forms her feet.
The Farmer's Daughter Legend
Another legend has a more rural background. It speaks of a beautiful farmer's daughter who fell in love with another farmer. One night, the farmer saw a different man at her doorway. Out of jealousy, he tragically killed the other man. The woman also lost her life during this event. A few days later, a big storm hit, and the mountain range was formed, taking the shape of the woman.
Airplane Accident
On December 4, 1958, a plane from Aviaco had an accident near La Mujer Muerta. The plane was flying from Vigo Airport to Barajas Airport in Madrid. Due to bad weather, the plane lost height and crashed into a part of the mountain called La Rodilla de la Mujer Muerta. Sadly, all 21 people on board, including passengers and crew, lost their lives.
