Where La Petite Rivière Starts
La Petite Rivière begins in a small lake on Anticosti Island. This lake is surrounded by marshy areas. The lake is about 83 meters (272 feet) above sea level.
The river's starting point is:
- About 195.3 kilometers (121.4 miles) east of Port-Menier, the main village.
- About 13.7 kilometers (8.5 miles) east of the island's eastern tip.
- About 6.5 kilometers (4.0 miles) south of the island's northeastern shore.
- About 13.3 kilometers (8.3 miles) north of the island's southeastern shore.
The River's Journey
From its source, La Petite Rivière flows generally southeast. It runs between the Cormorant River to its west and Baie du Naufrage on the east coast. The river travels about 16.9 kilometers (10.5 miles). During its journey, it drops about 82 meters (269 feet) in elevation.
Here's how the river flows:
- For the first 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles), it flows southeast through marshes. It then turns east and collects water from other marshy areas and small lakes.
- Next, for 8.9 kilometers (5.5 miles), it continues southeast. It forms small curves and picks up water from a stream and more marshes.
- Finally, for 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles), it flows southeast through another marshy area.
Where the River Ends
La Petite Rivière empties into Cybèle Bay. This bay is on the south shore of Anticosti Island. The river's mouth is about 2.0 kilometers (1.2 miles) northeast of the Au Cormoran river's mouth. It's also about 5.2 kilometers (3.2 miles) southwest of Pointe Health. This point is near the eastern end of Anticosti Island.
The lower part of the river's left bank forms a boundary. It helps define the Pointe-Heath ecological reserve. This reserve is a protected natural area.
