La Rioja is an important city in Argentina. It is the capital and largest city of the La Rioja Province, Argentina. The city is located in the eastern part of the province.
It was first called the City of All Saints of New Rioja in Spanish. La Rioja sits at the foot of the Velasco Sierras mountains. It is about 1,167 kilometers (725 miles) from Buenos Aires. It is also about 430 kilometers (267 miles) from Córdoba.

History of La Rioja

The city of La Rioja was founded in the year 1591. It was established by the governor of Tucumán Province.
Geography and Climate
La Rioja has a semi-arid climate. This means it is quite dry. Summers are hot, with average temperatures from 21°C (70°F) to 35°C (95°F). Sometimes, temperatures can even go above 45°C (113°F).
Winters are cooler, with average temperatures from 5°C (41°F) to 19°C (66°F). Most of the rain falls during the summer months. The average rainfall for the whole year is about 411 millimeters (16 inches).
Places to See
The city has interesting places to visit. One of them is the Museo Folklórico. This museum is in a building that is very old, from the 17th century. It shows off local music, like chaya music, and tells about the Tinkunaco festival.
La Rioja is also home to a large sports stadium. It is called the Estadio Carlos Augusto Mercado Luna. This stadium can hold 35,000 people.

The city has its own airport. It is called Capitán Vicente Almandos Almonacid Airport. You can find flights there from Aerolíneas Argentinas.
