History of La Roda de Andalucía
Historians have found signs of human activity in this area from a very long time ago. During ancient Roman times, tools and weapons were found here. These items date back to a big war between two famous Roman leaders, Julius Caesar and Pompey. They were likely used during a battle called the Battle of Munda.
After the Christian armies, led by Ferdinand III of Castile, took back the land from the Moors, La Roda became a border town. It was close to the Emirate of Granada, which was a Muslim kingdom. Later, the town and the whole region of Estepa became part of the lands controlled by the Order of Santiago, a group of knights.
In 1559, Philip II of Spain created the title of "Marquess of Estepa." La Roda belonged to this noble family until the early 1800s. A big change happened in the 19th century when the railroad arrived. New train lines connected La Roda to other important cities like Córdoba, Málaga, and Utrera.
In 1916, the town officially added "DE ANDALUCIA" to its name. This was done to make sure people didn't confuse it with other towns named La Roda in Spain.
