History of La Uribe
Early Beginnings of Uribe
The town of La Uribe has a long history, dating back to around 1865. It was first settled by people working for a company called Herrera and Uribe. This company was interested in the natural resources of the area.
Why the Name "La Uribe"?
The town got its name from Antonio Uribe. He was one of the partners in the company that helped establish the town. The company's main goal was to manage the trade of natural products. These included rubber and especially quinine, which was a very important medicine back then.
Becoming a Municipality
La Uribe officially became a municipality in 1921. This meant it had its own local government. At that time, it even included the area of San Juan de Arama. However, this status changed a few years later.
Changes in Status
In 1925, La Uribe stopped being a municipality. It became a "corregimiento" instead. A corregimiento is a smaller administrative division within a municipality. Even with this change, the town of Uribe remained the oldest settlement in the area.
