Lac d'Orédon is a beautiful lake in the Hautes-Pyrénées mountains of France. It's not a natural lake, but a reservoir that was made bigger by building a dam. It sits very high up, at an elevation of 1,849 meters (about 6,066 feet) above sea level. The lake covers an area of 0.46 square kilometers, which is about the size of 46 football fields!

This lake is quite old. It was one of the first lakes in the Pyrenees mountains to have a dam built on it. This happened way back in the 17th century.

Why Was Lac d'Orédon Built?

In 1864, the French government's Ministry of Agriculture made an important decision. They wanted to control the flow of water from the Neste canal. This canal feeds into rivers like the Gers, which are important for farming.

To do this, they decided to use the lakes in the upper Aure valley. These lakes included Aubert, Aumar, Cap-de-Long, and Lac d'Orédon. The government took over the lake for public use in June 1869. The dam and the reservoir were fully finished in 1884. This helped manage the water for farms and communities downstream.
